Artist's Description

This a very old graphite drawing of mine, done from a 19th C. photograph by the famed Pre-Raphaelite artist Dante Gabriel Rossetti. This was his favorite model and muse, Jane Morris. I was still working from photos at this stage, and still finding my own voice. So, yeah, I can do Realism! However, I find my current style more satisfying and expressive of my own vision.

I live and work in Santa Fe, New Mexico. My perception of things is expressed in a narrative, story-telling form. The style is cartoon-influenced, yet painterly; sometimes refined, sometimes crude. In recent years I have been moving toward a more Cartoon-Realist approach. I want a simpler look, where I can get the utmost expression out of each line, and each brushstroke expresses energy. My influences range from the scenes of everyday life pictured in the margins of medieval manuscripts, Late Medieval and early Renaissance art, Indian narrative folk painting, classic European Surrealism, Latin American Fantastic Realism and Mexican Social Commentary, comics and graphic novels.
