Artist's Description

Number 8 La Botella could represent untapped potential. Open the bottle to see what life brings you! This deck, the "classic" Don Clemente edition, is regarded as the original, but Mexican friends tell me there was an older version in which the bottle was not a ketchup bottle, but a liquor bottle. Don Clemente Jacques was a French immigrant who to Mexico and started a food products empire.

Holly Wood

I live and work in Santa Fe, New Mexico. My perception of things is expressed in a narrative, story-telling form. The style is cartoon-influenced, yet painterly; sometimes refined, sometimes crude. In recent years I have been moving toward a more Cartoon-Realist approach. I want a simpler look, where I can get the utmost expression out of each line, and each brushstroke expresses energy. My influences range from the scenes of everyday life pictured in the margins of medieval manuscripts, Late Medieval and early Renaissance art, Indian narrative folk painting, classic European Surrealism, Latin American Fantastic Realism and Mexican Social Commentary, comics and graphic novels.
