This a black and white study for the painting Now We Ride II, (see it in my painting gallery LIFE). I do a lot of black, white and grisaille studies for paintings, and many are stand-alone works on their own.This illustrates a scene of an abandoned mechanical horse in a run-down section of a city. There's a bit of sadness, but hope too, as a new family is enjoying the ride. This drawing is matted and framed.
I live and work in Santa Fe, New Mexico. My perception of things is expressed in a narrative, story-telling form. The style is cartoon-influenced, yet painterly; sometimes refined, sometimes crude. In recent years I have been moving toward a more Cartoon-Realist approach. I want a simpler look, where I can get the utmost expression out of each line, and each brushstroke expresses energy. My influences range from the scenes of everyday life pictured in the margins of medieval manuscripts, Late Medieval and early Renaissance art, Indian narrative folk painting, classic European Surrealism, Latin American Fantastic Realism and Mexican Social Commentary, comics and graphic novels.
