The gallery that commissioned this image wanted all the participating artists to put their own unique interpretations on all the cards in the traditional Mexican deck of fortune-telling cards called Loteria. I was assigned #3, La Dama, traditionally portrayed as an elegant, respectably attractive woman strolling down an avenue. I conflated her with Kitsune, the Japanese fox spirit, who can change from a fox into a seductive woman. The Lady is more than she appears.
I live and work in Santa Fe, New Mexico. My perception of things is expressed in a narrative, story-telling form. The style is cartoon-influenced, yet painterly; sometimes refined, sometimes crude. In recent years I have been moving toward a more Cartoon-Realist approach. I want a simpler look, where I can get the utmost expression out of each line, and each brushstroke expresses energy. My influences range from the scenes of everyday life pictured in the margins of medieval manuscripts, Late Medieval and early Renaissance art, Indian narrative folk painting, classic European Surrealism, Latin American Fantastic Realism and Mexican Social Commentary, comics and graphic novels.
