This is one of my Day of the Dead themes. In Mexico, there are processions on the way to the cemetery where people sometimes carry big papier mache skeletons and skulls. I was thinking of the funny things that could happen on the way, especially if one had been celebrating a little too much. Then there are deeper levels of meaning about how people approach life and death.
About Holly Wood
I live and work in Santa Fe, New Mexico. My perception of things is expressed in a narrative, story-telling form. The style is cartoon-influenced, yet painterly; sometimes refined, sometimes crude. In recent years I have been moving toward a more Cartoon-Realist approach. I want a simpler look, where I can get the utmost expression out of each line, and each brushstroke expresses energy. My influences range from the scenes of everyday life pictured in the margins of medieval manuscripts, Late Medieval and early Renaissance art, Indian narrative folk painting, classic European Surrealism, Latin American Fantastic Realism and Mexican Social Commentary, comics and graphic novels.
