Artist's Description

This was done for Cactus Gallery in Los Angeles' annual show based on themes from the Mexican deck of Loteria gaming and fortune-telling cards. My card was El Violoncello, so I took the pose from a portrait by Sir Anthony Van Dyck, and melded it with the head of a fox, as I have done in other works, creating a portrait of Kitsune, the Japanese Fox-Woman spirit, in a musical mood.

I live and work in Santa Fe, New Mexico. My perception of things is expressed in a narrative, story-telling form. The style is cartoon-influenced, yet painterly; sometimes refined, sometimes crude. In recent years I have been moving toward a more Cartoon-Realist approach. I want a simpler look, where I can get the utmost expression out of each line, and each brushstroke expresses energy. My influences range from the scenes of everyday life pictured in the margins of medieval manuscripts, Late Medieval and early Renaissance art, Indian narrative folk painting, classic European Surrealism, Latin American Fantastic Realism and Mexican Social Commentary, comics and graphic novels.
