This is part of my yearly output of paintings for The Day of The Dead, the Mexican and southwestern celebration of the continuum of Life, Death, and reverence for our ancestors. Three ants are happily rolling away some sugar skulls that fell off a vendor's cart. Feel free to read something deeper into it- It's there.

Holly Wood

I live and work in Santa Fe, New Mexico. My perception of things is expressed in a narrative, story-telling form. The style is cartoon-influenced, yet painterly; sometimes refined, sometimes crude. In recent years I have been moving toward a more Cartoon-Realist approach. I want a simpler look, where I can get the utmost expression out of each line, and each brushstroke expresses energy. My influences range from the scenes of everyday life pictured in the margins of medieval manuscripts, Late Medieval and early Renaissance art, Indian narrative folk painting, classic European Surrealism, Latin American Fantastic Realism and Mexican Social Commentary, comics and graphic novels.
